His latest condemnation , delivered before a croud of tens of thousands , described the 'Ndrangheta as the "adoration of evil and contempt of the common good"

"Those who in their lives follow this path of evil , as mafiosi do , are not in communion with God"

The 'Ndrangheta is a network of clans in the "toe" of Italy that demonates the country's cocaine trade

A beatification is the third of four steps in the process by which someone officially becomes a Saint

It requires at least one miracle to have been attributed to the intercession of a candidate for Sainthood who , once beatified is given the title blessed

Appeal To Pope Over Jersey Church Planning Dispute

A plea has been made to the Pope to back a campaign to stop a disused Catholic church in Jersey being knocked down for houses

Fraiser Martian who lives close to the church in Gorey , has written to the Vatican because he is so upset by the proposals

More than 100 islanders have signed a petition against the development

Mr. Martain said that if the site had to be developed , it should be turned into a cistian outreach centre

"this could encompass a whole range of things " he said "anything from a drop in coffee centre , a place for quiet reflection , or a place where christian doctors , psychiatrists or financial advisor's could offer services for free"

The East of Jersey Catholic church says houses are the best option for the site , and over the years , no one had shown an intrest in using the building for purposes other than Catholic worship

The planning department is now reviewing plans for two three bedroom homes , and car parking on the Main Road site

In a statement Monsignor Nicholas France , Catholic Dean in Jersey , said it is accepted that the opinions of local people have been heard as expressed in a clear manner through the media

"As for alternitive uses , then individuals or groups are welcome to purchace the site in the normal manner , following the outcome of due process"

The nineteenth century building became a church in 1954 , and closed in May 2013 , coinciding with the retirement of Father Brian Sanderman

Pope Francis Announces Beatification Date For Paul VI

Pope Francis has set another of his predecessors on the road to sainthood

He approved a miracle credited to the intercession of Paul VI , who died in 1978 after a 15 year Pontificate and is remembered by many for his ban on artificial contraception for Catholics

The beatification ceremony will be held at the Vatican on October 19th , this move comes just two weeks after the Canonisation of two other 20th century Popes , John XXIII  and John Paul II

Beatification is the third of four steps in the process by which someone  officially becomes a saint

It requires at least one miracle to have been attributed to the intercession of a candidate for sainthood who once beatified , is given the title blessed

After beatification , a separate miracle would have to be verified in order for Paul VI to be Canonised , declared a saint , allowing him to be Venerated by the universal church as , "an example of Holiness that can be followed with confidence"

Paul VI was  born Giovanni Battista Montini , in the Lombardy region of Italy in 1897

He was   elected Pope in 1963

Pope Francis Calls For Legitimate Redistrbution Of Wealth To The Poor

Pope Francis called Friday for governments to redistribute wealth to the poor in a new spirit of generosity to help curb the "economy of exclusion"that is taking hold today

Francis made the appeal during a speech to U..N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and the heads of major U.N. agencies who are meeting in Rome

Latin America's first Pope has frequently lashed out at the injustices of capitalism and the global economic system that excludes so   much of humanity

On Friday , Francis called for the United Nations to promote a "worldwide ethical mobilization" of solidarity with the poor in a new spirit of generosity

He said a more equal form of economic progress can be had through " the legitimate redistribution of economic benifits by the state , as well as indispensable co operation between the private sector and civil society"

Francis had a simular message to the world economic forum in January and in his apostolic exhoratation "the joy of the gospel" that document , which denounced trickle down economic theories as unproven and naive , provoked criticism in the U.S. that he was Marxist

Francis has denied he's marxist and spent years in Argentina battling marxist excesses of liberation theology , but he has said from the outset that he wants a Church that "is poor and for the poor" and ministers to the most marginal of society

On Friday he urged the U.N. to promote development goals that attack the root causes of poverty and hunger , protect the environment and ensure "dignified" labor for all

"Specifically , this involves challenging all forms of injustices and resisting the economy of exclusion , the throwaway culture and the culture of death which now adays sadly risk becoming passively accepted" he said

Vatican States Must Tackle Child Abusers Amongst Clergy

The Vatican has told the United Nations that the Holy See's powers to prosecute abusing priests do not extend beyond the tiny Vatican City State

"The Holy See has no jurisdiction over every member of the Catholic Church" Archbishop Silvano Tomasi said

The archbishop who is the papal envoy to the U.N. was speaking in Genevia to the U.N. committee against tourture

Victims of clerical sex abuse argue thet the Catholic Church has failed to protect children and shielded abusers , they also argue  that rape and molestation of children come under the terms of the U.N. convention against torture

It is the second time this year that the Vatican is being scruttinised by the United Nations over it's record in dealing with child sex abuse by priests

Archbishop Tomasi said the Vatican could only apply the U.N. convention which it signed in 2002 inside Vatican City , which has a resident population of less than 1,000 , U.N. experts challange that position , alleging it was an attempt to deflect criticism by using excessively legalistic arguments

In January the U.N. Committee for the rights of the child (CRC) accused the Vatican of fosteringimpunity for abusive clergy , many cases of molestation and rape go back decades and have only come to light recently

Hundreds of predatory priests have been defrocked , but victim's groups say the Vatican was too slow to act and covered up cases for years

In Rome last week a new advisory board set up by Pope Francis , met for the first time , it aims to improve best practice worldwide for the protection of minors from abusive priests

The Vatican refused a request from the CRC for data on abuse , on the grounds that it only released such information as part of legal proceedings

How Does Someone Become A Saint ?

Step One ; Wait five years , or don't

The process to make someone a Saint cannot normally start until at least fie years after their death

This is to allow time for emotions following the death to calm down , and to ensure that the individual's case can be evaluated objectively

Some have to wait a long time before they reach Catholic Sainthood , Saint Bede , the theologian died in 735 , but had to wait 1,164 years before he was declared a Saint

The waiting period can be waived but the Pope as Pope John Paul II did for Mother Teresa , beginning the process only two years after her passing

Step Two ; Become a 'Servant of God"

Once the five years are up , or a waiver is granted , the bishop of the diocese where the person who died can open an investigation into the life of the individual , to see whether they lived their lives with sufficient holiness and virtue to be considered for Sainthood

If there is sufficient evedence , the bishop asks the Congregation for the causes of Saint's to the Pope on Saints , for permission to open the case

Once the case is accepted for consideration , the individual can be called a "Servent of God"

Step Three ; Show proof of a life of 'Heroic Virtue'

The Congregation for the Causes of Saint's , scrutinises the evidence , if the candidates holiness , work and signs that people have been drawn to prayer , through their example

If the Congregation approves the case , it is passed to the Pope

If the Pope decides that the person lived a life of "heroic virtue" , they can then be called "Venerable"

Popes who have been bestowed the title of "Venerable " include Paul VI  and Pias XII

Step Four ; Verifies Miracles

To reach the next stage Beatification , a miracle needs to be attributed to prayers made to the individual after their death

The prayers being granted are seen as  proof that the idividual is already in heaven and hence able to intercede with God on others behalf

Incidents need to be "varified" by evidence before they are accepted as miracles

After Beatification , the candidate is given the title "Blessed"

There is one exception to the miracle reuirement , a martyr , someone who died for their faith , can be Beatified without a verified miracle

Srep Five ; Canonisation

Canonisation is the final stage in declaring a deceased person a saint , to reach this stage , normally a second miracle needs to be attributed to the candidate after being Beatified
