Marin County Wetlands Rise Again In Hamilton Airfield Restoration
A cheer went up as salt water from San Pablo Bay poured through a breached levee April 25th , and flooded old abandoned Hamilton field in Novato , a landmark moment in the effort too restore bay area marshland habitat
The levee breach was the last biggest step in nearly two decades of work by conservationists to reconnect 64 acres , about 1 square mile of wetlands too the bay and to restore tideland habitat for shore birds , water fowl , fishes and wildlife
The flooding of the runway at the former Air Force Base , is part of a regional effort too restore 100,000 acres of former wetlands around San Francisco Bay , according to conservationists , the Hamilton area was diked off around the turn of the 19th century , cutting off a primary landing spot for thousands of migrating water fowl along the Pacific flyway, it had remained dry until the 25th of April , when a back hoe dug out the remaining barrier
The bay water began seeping through as the last chunk of mud was pushed out of the way during high tide within seconds , water was rushing through the breach , flowing like a river through the man made channel onto a portion of the airfield already covered with water from recent rains and runoff that was deliberately pumped in , the wetlands will fill up ansd recede with the tides , but it will be another 10 to 20 years for it to become a salt marsh
creating the new tidal marsh , which cost $ 107 million over ten years , involved more than just letting inthe water , draining the land had caused it to subside , so 5.6 million cubic yards of dredged mud had had to be brought in to raise to raise the land to it's natural height , volunteers and students planted native vegetation and grew tens of thousands of plants on the imported material , 3/4 of which came from dredging the Port of Oakland
Hundreds of thousands of acres of marshland once lined San Francisco Bay , and the delta , but 85% of the historic habitat was drained , dried out for farmland or paved over for urban development
Important Ancient Miwok Artifacts Paved Over For Housing
A treasure trove of coastal Miwok life dating back 4,500 years to the time of the Pyramids of Giza or before , was located here in Marin , then ruined, destroyed to make way for multi million dollar housing units
The Miwok burial mound and village site , so rich in history it was dubbed "grandfather midden" , the mound was examined and classified under secracy before construction was allowed to begin this month on the $55 million Rose Lane development in Larkspur
The 300 foot long site held the graves of 600 Miwok Indians , tools musical instruments , harpoon tips and throwing sticks , more ancient than the use of the bow and arrow , bones from both the Grizzly and the California Black Bear , long gone from the area , were also found , along with what was believed to have been a ceremonial condor
This Miwok cache in archaeoiogical terms was worth millions and included the largest known prehistoric bear bone collection to have been found in the area
The miwok remains (bodies were relocated , however no other artifacts were saved, instead all of the finds including stone tools and carved stone idols believed to have been used in trade with other tribes , were removed and reburied in an undisclosed location on the site , then they were apparently graded over , destroying an archaeological find of great importance , lost forever , the carbon dating of soil samples from the mound placed them to the time of Egypt's constructing of their early pyramids , and is said by archaeologists who worked the site to have been one of the finest Miwok sites ever to have been found in the Bay area and it was a shame to have lost such a window unto the past
For those of you who know Marin, the Miwok site hade been across from the old Value World store , where ther old Green Houses sat , much of that area 4,500 years ago would have been marsh type area , unless the Geology was way diffrent that long ago

Local Man's Death a Mystery
On June 6th Local long time Marin Resident Laurence G. Mather was found in his car by the side of the road at 4 O' Clock in the morning not far from his place of work Comcast Livermore , E.M.T.'s preformed C.P.R. on the man and took him to the nearest Medical facility, where the Dr.'s there then proceided to place the man in their I.C.U.on full life support, the Doctors had first though it was the paitent's heart, but their tests came back negitive, also negitive on their Tox Panel , they then did other tests ruling out both anurisim and embolisims as the possiablity, also ruled out stroke as the culpret , the Paitent did have a history of smoking, however that too was ruled out as the cause of his demise, the Marin resident finally started to have kidney failure , and Dr.'s placed a shunt in ready in case dyalasis was needed, they then did an E.E.G. Brain wave reading, which came back as flatline, meaning he was Brain Dead, there was no Brain wave activity, so the Paitent's next of kin were advised , and it was decided amongst them as with out Brain activity there was no chance of any sort of recovery,so they had the Dr.'s remove the machinary,it took very little time for the man to expire , though to them it seemed an eternity, it was but twenty min. and his heart ceased to beat and he was gone,as it happens only two years and four months earlier his father had passed, although the Doctor's had not found any reason for the man's passing ,it was decided by his mother that an autopsy would not be performed on him, so his cause of passing will forever remain a mystery to all .
The problem for the remaining family members now is that the Doctor who filled out the certificate of Death must not be able to read, as the man's name was correctly spelt on his paitent records, however, they managed to mis spell his name on his Death Certificate, causing many problems until it can be resolved .
as the Man normally was due at his place of work at 3:00 in the morning, it is believed that whatever occured happened on his way to work as he was so close by his work place,it is also believed that what ever occured, the man felt something, as he had the time to pull his car over to the side of the road before passing, thus avoiding any accidents with any other motorists whom may have been out at that time of morning.
He was survived by 3 siblings, a daughter, son in law,and 2 Grand children, as well as his mother two nieces and a Grand Neice,a Memorial Service was held on Sunday June 17 th, at the Chaple of the Hills in San Anselmo, attendence was sparce due to it being held on Father's Day,he passed just 20 days shy of his 58th Birthday.
